A farewell to David Lynch, rewatching L.A. Story and Yorgos Lanthimos' new photobook

“The power of both”: a farewell to David Lynch
“David Lynch’s work always began with an idea—unformed but alive, requiring the quiet resolve of an artist to bring it into being. The product of Missoula, Montana, and an Eagle Scout by his own description, Lynch maintained that his art was not, as some critics charged, “weird,” but an honest reflection of thoughts and dreams that many could understand, if only they allowed themselves.” Film journalist and David Lynch expert Andy Hazel pens a fond farewell to the master of cinematic surrealism, who passed away last week at 78 years-old, leaving an insurmountable legacy in his wake.
L.A. Story—a much needed rewatch in a time of crisis
“I live in Los Angeles and there’s a shot from the 1991 satirical romantic-comedy L.A. Story that I keep coming back to this week. It captures the film’s star and screenwriter Steve Martin standing before a freeway sign that reads, ‘L.A. Wants 2 Help U’. In the wake of the city’s devastating fires, from the coast in the Pacific Palisades to the tree-lined streets of Altadena, it’s quite clear that this sentiment goes beyond something that only happens in the movies—it’s a truth.” Now online, Los Angeles-based journalist Hannah Benson pens a love letter to L.A. Story, arguing that the Steve Martin-starring rom-com demands a rewatch, depicting a city, which, despite all its flaws, ultimately wants to help.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ new photography book is a thing of twisted beauty
Yorgos Lanthimos is one of contemporary cinema’s most lauded art-house heroes, appealing to mainstream audiences as well as those who have followed his work since the weird days of Dogtooth. The auteur has now released a portfolio of his behind-the-scenes photographs of the making of 2024's Kinds of Kindness. Titled i shall sing these songs beautifully, here we have a collection of haunting, ambiguous images that not only document the film, but almost create an entirely new world out of it. Don’t expect glamorous shots of Willem Dafoe and Emma Stone joking around outside of their trailers. This carefully curated series of images inhabits a strange space between the real location of New Orleans and the cinematic dimension Lanthimos is exploring, almost as though complimenting Kinds of Kindness’s three narratives with a new, fourth element.
