Building Barbie Land: an interview with Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer
Beyond the who’s who cast, dazzling brand partnerships, Mark Ronson-produced soundtrack and CHANEL costumes, Barbie’s most salient element was undoubtedly the set design. Greta Gerwig had long admired the work of Production Designer Sarah Greenwood and Set Decorator Katie Spencer, a creative duo who have worked on films such as Atonement, Anna Karenina and Beauty and the Beast. “What Greta liked about our work, all the way back to Pride & Prejudice, was the creation of an entire world,” Greenwood tells A Rabbit’s Foot. “When you think of Barbie you think of something very simple and two-dimensional. It was about how you bring that to life.” says Spencer.
